Optional Mid-summer eve social programme

The last day of the conference,  Friday 21 June, is the Mid-summer eve in Finland (”Juhannus”) and one of the main public holidays. Many Finns head to their summer cottages, but more and more people stay in the city too. General information about the Finnish Mid-summer can be found here: Visit Finland -webpage. One popular ”Juhannus excursion”, also among locals, is the the Ukkopekka cruise through the beautiful Turku archipelago to small Loistokari island. On the way you will pass by the medieval Turku Castle and the picturesque villas on the shores of the nearby islands. To celebrate Juhannus, there are two cruises on programme that evening instead of the regular one and we have pre-booked tickets for ESEE participants for both cruises. The later one allows you to admire the bonfires that will be set around midnight along the seaside.

You may also join a walking tour in the city centre on late Friday afternoon. On the ”Riverside walk,” you will learn about the history and modern day Turku. The tour will end in Brewery restaurant Koulu, formerly a school (thus the name ”koulu” which means school in English), where you might want to continue the evening tasting the local specialities in their inner yard terrace.
