Compensating for climate impacts of participation in the conference
By participating in scientific conferences, we cause harmful environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions and habitat destruction. Climate and biodiversity offsetting are approaches where such harmful environmental impacts are compensated by producing benefits for nature or sequestration of carbon that would not have been achieved otherwise. We aim to offset the harmful climate and biodiversity impacts of the ESEE 2019 conference in the following way:
We provide conference participants with two main options to compensate for climate effects in Finland.
The first is purchasing a piece of old-growth forest via the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation. As stated on the website, the “Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation is a non-governmental organization that promotes the protection of old growth forests. The foundation has been active since its establishment in 1995, purchasing old untouched forests with donation funds and applying for permanent protection for them according to the Nature Conservation Act.” For more information, please visit the following web page: https://www.luonnonperintosaatio.fi/en/english/about-us
The second is purchasing a share of the Finnish Carbon Stock Exchange (Hiilipörssi), by which you invest carbon from the atmosphere into the swamps, the largest carbon stock in Finland. By investing in the Finnish Carbon Stock Exchange, you in addition help to restore the swamp and to clean up water. Unfortunately, the web page of the Finnish Stock Exchange is only available in Finnish, see https://hiiliporssi.fi/.
We recommend that you purchase a piece of old-growth forest via the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation at a cost of 5-100 euros or a share of the Finnish Carbon Stock Exchange at the cost of 50 euros.
